AT&T, VERIZON SELL EACH OTHER WIRELESS MARKETS

AT&T said it and Verizon Wireless are trading wireless assets. AT&T is paying $2.35 billion in cash to acquire properties including licenses, network assets and 1.5 million current subscribers in 79 service areas. The Verizon customers are in mostly rural parts of 18 states. Verizon was required to sell the properties as a condition of approvals for taking over Alltel. Verizon will pay $240 million to acquire some Centennial Communications assets, including licenses, network assets and nearly 120,000 current subscribers. They're in five service areas in Louisiana and Mississippi. AT&T expects the sale of assets to Verizon Wireless to take care of possible overlaps between AT&T's and Centennial's operations and help advance final regulatory approval of the carrier's acquisition of Centennial.
