CONSUMER ADVOCATES SEEK ONE-DAY MAXIMUM FOR NUMBER PORTS

Consumers Union and Public Knowledge asked the FCC to require that wireline and intermodal number ports get done within a day. In a letter Friday to acting Chairman Michael Copps, the groups said the current "unnecessarily long" four-day porting interval allows incumbent phone companies to "hobble competition and discourage innovation." The time limit, set by the FCC "nearly 12 years ago," discourages consumers from considering alternative providers, they said.
