FCC Gives Green Light to WCS Mobile Broadband Services

The FCC changed its rules for the wireless communications service band, making 25 MHz of spectrum available for mobile broadband use by WCS licensees more than a decade after the commission took up the issue. The rules have limited use of the spectrum to fixed services through out-of-band-emission restrictions. Now they've been loosened. Chairman Julius Genachowski called the ruling timely because companies are gearing up to offer 4G and the FCC is working to "unleash spectrum." The order provides a "pro-consumer framework" and constitutes action that "we will look back upon with pride," said Commissioner Michael Copps.
