Years in the Making, Emergency Alerts to Cellphones Are Finally in Sight

The FCC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said they're working with major ncarriers on an early version of a system for sending emergency alerts to wireless ndevices. The Personal Localized Alerting Network will be introduced in New York nCity and Washington, D.C., this year and elsewhere in mid-2012. Congress in 2006 passed a nlaw requiring a voluntary program of targeted alerts to wireless devices. The commission’s noriginal target date for cellphone alerts was December 2010.
