Rural Telcos Worry About Cuts in Federal Loans for Broadband Projects in Countryside

Some rural telcos are worried that cuts to the Rural Utilities Service budget in the fiscal 2011 ncontinuing resolution could upend broadband investment in the countryside. The nresolution would fund the government through September. The measure provides $22.32 nmillion for RUS broadband loans, an amount that industry officials said would support up to n$400 million in lending. But it would rescind $39 million in carry-over balances from previous nyears. The measure would authorize $13.4 million to pay for broadband transmission under nthe Distance Learning and Telemedicine program but rescind $25 million in carry-over nbalances.
