Lockheed Martin reached a milestone in developing the U.S. Air Force's next generation Global PositioningnSystem III satellites by turning on power to the system module of the program's first spacecraft.nThe team is on track to deliver the first satellite for launch availability in 2014, Lockheed said in a press releasen(http://bit.ly/Xdri5T). The GPS III program will replace aging GPS satellites, "while improving capabilitynto meet the evolving demands of military, commercial and civilian users," it said. Successfully poweringnon the satellite, GPS III SV-1, demonstrates mechanical integration, "validates the satellite's interfacesnand leads the way for electrical and integrated hardware-software testing," Lockheed said.
