Appropriate staffing level allows for 'just-in-time' patenting

Adopting a new staffing model, which increased professional staff from 4 to 9 FTEs, has enabled the Vanderbilt University Center for Technology and Commercialization to pursue a "just-in-time" approach to patenting, says Alan Bentley, assistant vice chancellor for tech transfer. This approach, he explains, is a departure from the "inventory model" practiced at many universities, where production is decoupled from sales and patenting decisions are made independently of market intelligence for the innovation.
