Thomas Hughes [3] very appropriately referred to the interactions between science, technology and society as "messy". Even as we have developed multiple frameworks and perspectives to identify, clarify and explore these interactions, they remain fundamentally "messy". In fact, the interactions of science, technology and society have become even messier over the past century as these interactions have accelerated. This acceleration is evident in many interconnected areas such as the spread and impact of the automobile on the environment and on the geo-politics of oil.
