Scholars have studied and written about the history of technology for many decades, indeed centuries. But the emergence of the history of technology as an academic discipline can be attributed to the vision of a young professor at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Melvin Kranzberg. In the late 1940s, Case's president, T. Keith Glennan, recognized the need for a better-designed liberal-arts component to the curriculum of its engineering students.
