Microsoft shipped BizTalk Server 2000 around the time it launched its .Net campaign, signaling an ambitious entry into the EAI products space. With the 2002 release, the buzzword-compliant BizTalk has been updated for better administration, and greater ease of use. BizTalk Server is a switching center for building communications links based on networked file shares and Internet protocols HTTP, HTTPS, and SMTP. It runs as a service, watching for incoming documents and processing them. To use BizTalk Server, you'll also need IIS. This will let the server accept documents via HTTP and HTTPS, and SQL Server 2000, which it uses extensively to handle document processing and store script objects. BizTalk Server can also simply watch folders. For example, you can direct your legacy application to save its output to a watched folder and the server will pick it up for processing. The server also has a couple of other channels for documents that I'll discuss shortly.
