I find it amusing how members of each new generation rediscover what members of the preceding generation already knew. In the old days, the Fortran compiler was a great timesaver because it kept you from having to write assembly language programs. Later, professors at Dartmouth decided that Fortran was too complicated, so they developed Basic, an interpreted language. Basic reigned supreme in the microcontroller world for many years, until small computer programmers rediscovered-you guessed it-compilers! With the advent of Web programming, the whole cycle began again. Instead of writing custom servers in C, developers began to use interpreted Perl (and CGI) to develop Web solutions. Then, Java programmers discovered compiled Web pages in the form of JSPs. And now, Microsoft's new .Net initiative brings the same evolution to the world of ASP. In a way, ASP.Net (sometimes called ASP+) is a compiled version of ASP with some differences and enhancements. Although ASP.Net is superficially similar to regular ASP, it has more in common with JSP.
