Global carbon fiber capacity expansion

In the 1960s, the industrial production of carbon fibers started in the UK, Germany, Japan, and the USA, with a total volume of less than 1,000 tons/year. In the 1980s, Japan started to become independent because of the availability of plants producing PAN precursor fiber using the wet-spinning process. The Japanese companies Toray and Toho Beslon have succeeded in expanding carbon fiber production. Today, these companies dominate the world's carbon fiber production by licenses and joint ventures.
