The project objective was the development of hybrid polyester yarn for automotive fabrics with improved elastic recovery. It is well known that PBT yarn has superior elastic recovery properties in comparison to PET fibers alone. There are of course alternatives such as elastane covered polyester and PET/PTT bicomponent fibers. This paper summarizes the work to develop an air-jet textured yarn in an appropriate combination of PET and PBT. So the idea was to develop a combination PET/PBT yarn in order to achieve a hybrid yarn. The work involved air-jet texturing experiments in various combinations and different set-up parameters in order to optimize the texturing effect and yarn structure to meet the automotive criteria. Furthermore, the physical and elastic properties of yarn combinations and durability of elastic recovery were tested to approve the achievement of desired yarn behavior.
