Conductive polymer based electro-conductive textiles for novel applications

Research on electro-conductive textiles based on conductive polymers like polyaniline (RAn), polypyrrole (PPy), polyacetylene (PAc), polythiophene (PTh), etc. has increased in recent years due to their high potential applications in various fields. These conductive polymers have electrical conductivity ranging from 1-10~(-4) Scm~(-1). By application of these polymers onto textile surface, novel textile composites which are strong, flexible, light weight and highly electro-conductive can be obtained. These textile composites are suitable for applications such as heating pads, EMI shielding, sensors, actuators, antistatic materials, etc. In this article a concise review of the methods of applications of conductive polymers onto textile surface, merits and demerits of these methods, properties of electro-conductive textiles and their potential applications are discussed.
