The production of composite components is still costly. Thanks to a new low-cost entry-level machine with a functional design, composite technology is now also available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For SMEs, the design and processing of fiber composite materials is complex and cost-intensive. On the sales markets of the German mechanical, plant and equipment engineering industry, however, there is great potential in the mid-price segment; inexpensive entry-level technologies are in demand. The orientation of the mechanical engineering industry towards frugal innovations promises new answers here. Frugal stands for Functional; Robust; User-friendly; Growing; Affordable; Local. Frugal production systems offer robust products with simple operation and a particularly good price-performance ratio. Simplified and application-oriented solutions can be adapted exactly to local needs. The production of composite components thus becomes affordable for start-ups and medium-sized companies. Following the principle of frugal innovation, the machine manufacturer M&A Dieterle GmbH, Ottenbach/Germany, in cooperation with the manufacturer of embroidery machines Tajima GmbH, Winterlingen/Germany, and the Institute of Aircraft Design of the University of Stuttgart (IFB) Stuttgart/Germany, designed the compact plant combination crosslayer. The newly developed plant combination covers the entire process chain from roving production to the adapted preform. It is easy to operate, economically affordable and fits into the area of a residential container (approx. 32 m~2).
