Library Programming Made Easy: A Practical Guide for Librarians

Libraries are no longer exclusively repositories of information. A visit to nearly any library finds announcements for a wide variety of activities such as yoga, crafting days, comic cons, budgeting classes, and book clubs. These programs take an immense amount of time and effort, not to mention trial and error, to discern what works for your particular patron-base. Building these programs from scratch can be intimidating; not all folks tasked with program planning have a background in it. This book seeks to provide a background for programming in libraries. The book is split into eleven chapters, each covering different aspects of the planning and execution process for programming in academic and public libraries. This is not surprising, given that one author is an academic librarian and the other a public librarian. Demeter and Holmes spend the first chapter giving a brief overview of the various types of programs in libraries. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 cover early steps in the process, including making a case for programming, discovering the best programs for your library, seeking out partnerships, and making sense of funding. The middle third of the book covers the execution of programs, including two separate chapters on programming for academic libraries and public libraries. The final two chapters of the book cover next steps and additional tips and tools for the reader.
