Current refrigeration and cooling systems employ the concept of change in density of gases when subjected to different pressure ranges to cause the cooling effect. A traditional coolant called Freon used for these applications had a negative impact on the ozone layer, and hence it was banned. These coolants are dangerous to the environment and humans. Although relatively safer coolants are available, they suffer from high energy consumption from compressors and also excessive quantities of heating coils required for refrigeration and cooling systems. To overcome these issues, scientists from Perm State University are involved in the development of refrigerators and cooling systems that employ the principle of magnetic field refrigeration.
