PLASTIC COATINGS FOR MEDICAL IMPLANTS

Many diseases off late are increasingly being caused due to neural damage and curing them has become a challenge. Researchers are developing medical implants, which can stimulate neurons to facilitate the treatment of conditions caused by such neural damage. As a result, use of devices that are surgically implanted into the brain or other parts of the nervous system is growing rapidly. Though they prove to be efficient in stimulating nerve cells via an implanted electrode, there is a major issue over the damage that those devices can cause on the neural tissue. The insertion of the rigid metal electrode into soft tissue has been found to trigger a cascade of inflammatory signals thus damaging or killing the neurons. It can also trigger a scar to form around the metal.
