For those of us who have read and reread JoAnn Hackos' 1994 classic Managing your documentation projects, this updated and revised version has been eagerly anticipated. Often sequels or second versions miss their mark, not holding to the promise of the first. Hackos has deftly avoided that pattern and produced a successor that is destined to be another seminal work. Hackos has divided the material into three sections: "The framework," "Portfolio management," and "Project management." The first section discusses the vitality and complexity of information-development management. The Information Process Maturity Model (IPMM), introduced in Hackos's original book, has been fleshed out with additional information and the addition of two new characteristics: collaboration and change management. IPMM is an invaluable tool that can help you assess the maturity and success of a department's processes and products. I have used this tool to measure the progress of development plans for the departments that I have managed over the years. In my opinion, this refreshed view on IPMM is worth the price of book.
