The Foundations of a Strongly Developing Discipline

Keynote lectures bring out the worst in people. This used to be one of my adages, from my experiences attending conferences of all sorts. I felt the strong urge to reconsider this view after having attended the STC Technical Communication Summit in Atlanta earlier this year. The two keynote speakers at the Summit delivered some of the most inspiring and relevant presentations I have seen in years. Both of them reminded the audience of the foundations of our discipline and did this very convincingly. I cannot imagine anyone leaving the room without an increased awareness of the importance and viability of technical communication now and in the future-if only the room would have been filled with CEOs instead of technical communicators.
