Keeping Found Things Found: The Study and Practice of Personal Information Management

Personal information management (PIM)-finding, keeping, organizing, and maintaining information- continues to increase in importance in both academia and the popular press. PIM as a termrnwas first used in the 1980s as the personal computer generated excitement for its potential to greatly enhance the human ability to process and manage information. Keeping found things found (KFTF), a comprehensive overview of PIM, was published in 2008 but had its origins in a 2000 project of the same name. The project, based at the University of Washington's Information School (iSchool), had a National Science Foundation grant to study how people keep Web information for later use and how tools might help.
