Internet Research Skills

We often do Internet research haphazardly. The most common mistake is always relying on the same search engine to blindly seek "everything" on any given topic. Niall O Dochartaigh encourages us to take a more reasoned approach. With attempts to catalog the Internet long dead, he says, we must turn to sophisticated keyword search and specialized subject guides. He advises, "In this new environment, the most important research skills relate to channelling, evaluating, selecting and restricting information rather than the simple assembling of large quantities of related information" (p. 2).
