Treating burrows with baits or tracking powder would seem straightforward and easy. But technicians make many mistakes in these treatments. First of all, many technicians ignore the Norway rat's "neophobia": its fear of new objects and changes in its environment. If you disturb the burrows too much-by digging in them or closing them up right after treatment-the rats will become super-cautious and very difficult to kill. Second, technicians commonly use the wrong formulations. For example, dropping blocks or place packs into burrows (which rats often carry or kick back outside), or applying rodenticide tracking powder improperly or illegally (the directions for applying tracking powder into burrows are very restrictive and limited).
