The FAX about PDF: Why Send a FAX When You Can PDF It!

IF you have received a facsimile (fax) document containing text and graphics, then you are familiar with the poor output quality a fax machine, a fax modem, or fax board generates (Fig. 1). Stray lines and spots on the page, broken type, and graphic images lacking detail (specifically photographic images) are some of the problems noticeable when receiving a faxed document. On the other hand, Portable Docu- ment Format (PDF) files containing high quality text and graphics can be sent as efficiently as an email attachment and just as easy as a fax. Anyone receiving the PDF file by email is able to open it using Adobe Acrobat Reader, a program that is free to download from Adobe (www.adobe.com). Upon opening the PDF file in Acrobat Reader, you may read it on the screen or print it directly from several different computer platforms (Adobe Systems, Inc., 2001).
