Simply put, most of us are familiar with the Ice Packs or Freezer Blocks used in lunch boxes, which are frozen down at night and disperse that cold during the day, acting as a sort of 'cold battery'. This works on the principle of Latent Heat (remember your school Physics?) - the thermal energy released when the frozen medium inside thaws out and changes its state from being a solid back to a liquid.
