NON-STRUCTURED DATA MANAGEMENT BY MEANS OF OBJECT RELATIONAL DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Non-structured data appear in several application areas such as multimedia data management, biological databases, digital libraries, and data integration. There are two important considerations in this area of non-structured data: firstly, the need to find expressive data modelling formalisms for representing non-structured data and their manner of functioning and, secondly, how to implant the models available at present and in the future. The present paper focuses on this second aspect. In order to clarify the subject proposed, this paper begins by analysing a practical case ― the management of documents and their retrieval through conditions on their content. Next, the modular architecture of the ORDBMS is outlined, in particular that proposed by Informix, explaining the solutions for the cases of data access via Web and for document handling. Finally, the consequences of the use of these models on the database are discussed.
