Six-coordinate Iron(III) Porphyrin with DABCO and 4,4a?2-Bipy as an Axial Ligand: Synthesis and Properties

The binding of bis-nitrogen ligands, DABCO and 4, 4a?2-bipyridine, as axial ligand on the formation and coordination of heme analogue have been studied. Two new six coordinate and stable iron(III) heme analogues, [OEPFe(L)₂]ClO₄ (L = DABCO (1), 4, 4a?2-bipy (2)), where OEP is octaethylporphyrin, DABCO is 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and 4, 4a?2-bipy is 4, 4a?2-bipyridine, have been isolated. The compounds have been characterized by different spectroscopic methods. 1H NMR spectroscopy and magnetic moment measurements show that [OEPFe(L)₂]ClO₄ is paramagnetic and iron is low spin and six-coordinate.
