With Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal sta-te, India won the bid out of 50 member countries to host this year's PVSEC-18. This is the second occasion India is hosting the conference, since PVSEC-6 was held in New Delhi in 1992. West Bengal state was favoured over other states in India for PVSEC-18 as the state generates about 25 % of the country's total solar power. The state has already attracted a total investment of INR 40 billion (Indian Rupees, € 639 million) in the photovoltaic segment, all of which is expected to be operational by 2012. Of this, about INR 26 billion (€ 415 million) have been in the PV equipment manufacturing segment, including cells and modules. The investment has come from companies like Bhaskar Polysilicon (INR 20 billion/€ 319 million), Vikram Solar (INR 2 billion/€ 32 million) and Webel SL Energy (INR 1 miHion/€ 16,000). The balance has gone into setting up 30 MW of solar energy generation capacity, from companies such as Videocon Industries, Aston fieId, Titan Energy, etc.
