Depoldering occurs when the dike on the river side of a polder is relocated land inwards. The polder is "depoldered" and water can flood the area at high water levels. At Noordwaard the reduction of the primary water system and the opening of Bandijk will create a flooding area where water reaches a free flowing field, allowing the Noordwaard to return to the nature.
