Parc de La Villette

With its "layered, non-hierarchical, flexible and strategic" approach, OMA's project for the Parc de La Villette (1982), even though not realized, has rightly or wrongly become the model for an inventive method of planning with several layers placed one on top of the other, almost as if it were a new kind of theme park, open to a range of programs and perfect for situationist derives. The site was subdivided into many parallel strips, scraps of landscape produced by taking samples of various configurations of the land. In this way the architecture of a public space or a park deals with the specifics of a diversified program by projecting it into a "metropolitan field" and trying to get the different activities to coexist in mutual interference.
