John Singer Sargent's Triumph of Religion at the Boston Public Library: Creation and Restoration Narayan Khandekar, Gianfranco Pocobene and Kate Smith, editors
When the American expatriate artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) received the commission to paint a mural cycle for the Boston Public Library in 1890, he was pleased to accept the challenge of embellishing the interior of the Beaux-Arts masterpiece begun by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White in 1887. For his theme, he chose the development of the world's religions. For nearly 30 years, the highly successful figure painter and portraitist sought to expand his oeuvre with this monumental ensemble, orchestrating dramatic scenes that seem to burst their architectural confines with a finely controlled decorative sense in a space that became known as Sargent Hall.
