This is a compilation of contributions to Conservation Science 2007, a conference held in Milan, 10-11 May 2007, which includes studies relating to a wide range of cultural heritage, from graffitied murals to daguerreotypes and waterlogged wood. Contributions demonstrate an equivalents broad interpretation of conservation science, including experimental investigations of conservation procedures and materials, environmental monitoring and surveys, application of novel analytical techniques and technical/analytical case studies. In the introductory paper, Joyce Townsend provides a useful definition of conservation science and outlines its relationship to conservation and other areas of expertise in the UK. In particular, she describes the role of the Institute of Conservation Science (ICS), which in 2006 became the Institute of Conservation (Icon) Heritage Science group, one of the meeting's sponsors.
