Based on its title, one might seek out this book looking for the latest in textile conservation innovation. As the editors note, however, 'this is not a how-to book, but a book about why conservators do what they do'. Readers will find instead a thoughtful and eloquent review of textile conservators' approach to their profession and the knowledge, judgment and skills that it requires. This carefully crafted and annotated compilation will be an important reference book for students, conservators and museum professionals. Several themes are highlighted throughout the book: the shaping of job responsibilities resulting from the desire of cultural institutions to increase access and interpretation of collections; the evaluation, alteration and refinement of textile conservation treatments over time to be more effective while being less invasive; and the vital role of communication and collaboration among museum professionals, colleagues and the public in defining the needs of textile conservation.
