Preparation for Painting: The Artist's Choice and Its Consequences is the postprints from the interim meeting of the 'Paintings: scientific study, conservation and restoration' working group of the International Council of Museums-Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC). Held 31 May-1 June 2007, at the British Museum in London, the conference was the first dedicated exclusively to the preparatory layers of paintings. The volume contains a brief foreword from the editors, followed by 20 papers contributed by researchers from Europe, Australia and the United States. The subject is approached from a variety of research angles, including the study of documentary sources, the technical examination and scientific analysis of works of art, materials testing and historical reconstructions. Each contribution is well illustrated with colour and black and white images embedded within the text and includes useful references.
