American Painters on Technique: The Colonial Period to 1860

The literature on materials, techniques, and methods of artists based in Europe and active from the early modern period is very extensive, while that for American artists active before the middle of the twentieth century is very sparse by comparison. Indeed, the few published technical studies of American artists, or accounts of conservation treatments of their paintings, are scattered very widely in conservation journals and conference proceedings.
