A two-day symposium at New York University's Villa la Pietra in November 2006 marked the 40th anniversary of the flood that caused surprisingly little loss of life but enormous damage to library collections, art works, and other cultural artifacts in Florence, Italy. The publication resulting from that symposium offers many interesting and compelling insights. There are other books that describe events during and after the flood, but Conservation Legacies is the one to read if you want detailed information about what treatments were given - and why - to thousands of books and hundreds of art works, and other artifacts after they became wet and coated with oily mud.
