摘要

To ensure a sustainable growth and successful development of a port within a highly competitiveness environment like the Baltic region, a fast and flexible adaptation of the port to the changing requirements is necessary. This adaptation is not only limited to provide modern infra- and superstructure for the cargo handling operations within the port but also a modern administration that foster the competition among different operators and to provide space for value creation of the handled good is required. Under consideration of these issues the port can be developed to an important economical centre of the region and national economy.rnIn the framework of the increasing networking and globalisation of the world economy the exchange of goods between national economies is gaining importance. When the port of Rostock was built in the 1950-ies the focus was on the handling of raw materials and semi-finished products like coal, oil, raw metals, fertiliser etc., whereas today mainly high-quality industrial goods are handled. This general development is marked by the rapidly growing containerisation of goods handling in global trade and by the increase in RoRo-traffic, especially in the Baltic Sea region.rnAn overview of Rostock Port shows figure 1.rnIt is also to ascertain that the ports are developed with an absolute space for handling of goods from the vessel to the barge and on the landside transport mode such as roads and railway to a multimodal traffic and logistic centre with an added value in the port area and the settling of important industrial centre in the direct surrounding area of the port.
