摘要

The increasing use of wood plastic composites (WPC) requires knowledge of its specific properties, in particular the risk of fire. Flame retardants can reduce the flammability and fire propagation of the material. Therefore, the efficient use and knowledge about the mechanism of flame retardants in WPC is of enormous importance for fire safety. This includes the smoke in case of fire. The smoke affects the escape time of persons who are exposed to it due to the smoke toxicity, light absorption and scattering properties. The specific optical - density of smoke gases of WPC samples was determined by measuring the light transmission in the smoke density chamber according to ISO 5659-2. To evaluate toxicity, qualitative and quantitative determinations of the smoke gas composition are obtained by applying FTIR spectroscopy (Fourier Transform - Infrared Spectroscopy). To determine the particle emission, a particle analyser was coupled with the smoke density chamber. In this work different flame retardants were investigated regarding their mode of action depending on the type, amount and combination of flame retardants. The results of emitted toxic gases and particles are presented and discussed in the view of the used flame retardants in WPC's.
