High-Speed Railway Bridge over the Ebro River, Spain

The bridge over the Ebro River is located on the sub-stretch II-b from Zaragoza to Lerida on the high-speed railway line from Madrid through Zaragoza to the French border. Its total length amounts to 546 m with the following span distribution: 18 m + 6m x 24 m + 60 m + 120 m + 2 m x 60 m + 42 m (Figs. 1 and 2). The unique quality of this typology led to study thoroughly both the methodology and the adequate analysis method. Since this is a deck whose cross section is not homogenous longitudinally, its behaviour is clearly tri-dimensional which makes it necessary to use finite elements techniques. This special behaviour results from the presence of circular voids cores in the webs as well as the discontinuous upper ribs.
