摘要

The design and construction of the Irlahuell-tunnel was a great challenge for the contractor as the changing geological conditions required a continuous adaptation of the tunnelling method in order to ensure safe working conditions and to deliver a state-of-the-art tunnel. Experience gained during this project has showed that clear lines of communication between client and contractor, i.e. the decision-making partners, are of crucial importance for the success of such a demanding project. Furthermore, a close collaboration of the designer and the independent checking engineer with respect to defining and classifying possible karst cavities before they were encountered was also a key to the successful delivery of this project.
