The form of the new Aviva Stadium is truly site responsive and optimised to a wide variety of complex and altering constraints around the stadium. The bowl shape, roof and facade envelope were developed as one structure, in a seamless manner, thereby creating the form that is unique and already associated with the Aviva Stadium. The engineering challenges for the stadium were led by the ever-varying geometry, with all sections being unique. Parametric processes were used for geometric control of all parts of the works. The engineering design responses include an innovative steel roof with a unique "horseshoe" truss and dramatic frame geometry with 4 m cantilever-ing floor plates and inclined, curved concrete blades. The dramatic appearance of the stadium is provided by the stunning soft shape of the overall form seen in long-distance views and the intricacy and delicacy of the detailing of the cladding and roofing systems, as well as high-quality concrete finishes seen at closer distance. The paper also describes the significant engineering challenges for the boundary issues, including design and construction sequencing around a rail line and environmental wind engineering.
