In Europe, composite steel concrete structures represent the most common construction technique for bridges of small to medium spans. Seismic isolation provided by hysteretic dampers, such as fluid viscous and metallic yielding dampers, against earthquake excitation is a solution that usually increases the cost of the whole structure up to 1-1.5%. This paper describes the use of an innovative integrated seismic isolation system applied to three viaducts in the area of Venice, northern Italy. The adopted solution for seismic isolation, its purpose, its technical details and the steps necessary for its correct installation are described here.
