More than any other industry, the construction sector is affected by the ongoing sustainability debate, at least in Europe. This is primarily due to the pronounced environmental impact associated with the production of building materials, the erection of buildings and structures and their subsequent use. This holds especially true for concrete structures for two reasons: firstly, they constitute by far the largest group and, secondly, the production of concrete - and especially the production of its raw material cement -is associated with high energy consumption and substantial CO_2 emissions. Hence, there is presently considerable focus on the replacement of Portland cement clinker by different reactive powders and inert fines.
