Ramchandra Guha's edited volume Makers of Modern India is an incredible work that has the potential to trigger a fresh debate on Indian political thought and traditions. The book examines the thought of 19 prominent thinkers—from pre-independent and post-independent India—whose legacy the author believes has been decisive and important for India's evolution as a modern nation state. And this includes those whose ideas and innovative thoughts have slid into oblivion. According to Guha, at least 16 of these, apart from Mohammed Ali Jinnah, M.S. Gowalkar and Bal Gangadhar Tilak are relevant even today.
