SNC-Lavalin Group announced February 4 that one of itssubsidiaries, Atkins Energy Global Solutions, LLC, has beenselected by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.(TEPCO) to continue delivering high integrity containers tostore secondary radioactive waste from the processing of radioactiveliquid effluents at the Fukushima Daiichi NuclearPower Plant in Japan. This contract is within SNCL EngineeringServices. The March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami resultedin the need for a process to treat radioactive liquidwaste at Fukushima Daiichi. SNC-Lavalin’s advanced liquidwaste processing system (ALPS) was transferred under licenseto Atkins’ partner, Toshiba, to deploy for TEPCO atthe Fukushima site. In January 2020, the plant celebrated amilestone after treating more than one million cubic metersof radioactive liquid effluent. In the ALPS treatment process, the HICs are used to store the radioactive solid waste generatedduring the liquid effluent decontamination process.
