Khrunichev initiated construction of the International Space Station by developing, manufacturing and launching the Zarya functional cargo module or FGB-1 on 20 November 1998. It is also involved with the preparation and planned Proton launch on 12 November of the Zvezda service module in cooperation with RKK Energia, the prime contractor. It is to provide the ISS with a multipurpose module and a universal docking module as part of Russian participation in the ISS. Dr Sergei K. Shaevich, ISS/FGB Programme Director, stated that the back-up of Zarya could be converted into a multipurpose module and that the universal docking module is still on the drawing board.
