On 6 June 1967, the small northwest Texas town of guanah was in shock. Word had quickly spread of the tragic news that one of then- local heroes had died in an off-duty car crash. An accomplished and highly-motivated test pilot, Ed Givens had scorched a path across the skies in some of the hottest jets around, and then, at the age of 36, had become one of his nation's astronauts. These days his contribution to the space programme is virtually overlooked in books about the glory days of Apollo, while his name is conspicuously absent from the index pages of these publications. Yet, had he not died at the wheel of his car, Ed Givens would almost certainly have become famous as one of the handful of men who flew to the Moon.
