Four decades since 1968'space Olympics'

Nineteen-sixty-eight was the year of the 'space Olympics' as I dubbed it in a broadcast; and the Apollo 8 mission was just as exciting and significant for me as the Apollo 11 landing, which came seven months later. I had broken the news in June that NASA was likely to attempt to circle the Moon before Christmas that year. By then NASA had completed 17 manned flights and it was clear that, despite a slow start, they had overtaken the Soviets, as we called them then, in space technology.
