SOYUZ TMA-22/28S was launched through a raging snowstorm at 04:14 GMT (10:14 local time) on 14 November carrying Lt Col Anton Shkaplerov, Capt Anatoly Ivanishin, both on their first space flight, and retired US Coast Guard Capt Dan Burbank on his third mission. It was the last launch of the TMA series, replaced from the next flight by the improved TMA-M. The crewmembers went through the usual pre-launch rituals, signing their door at the cosmonaut hotel at Baikonur, a blessing by a Russian Orthodox priest and the departure from their quarters to the sound of the 1980's popular song Trava U Doma ('Grass of Home'). Once in their Sokol suits, Shkaplerov, Ivanishin and Burbank took the short walk to the base of the rocket covered in special blankets to ward off the falling snow.
