THE SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover from Cape Canaveral on 30 July is good news for space scientists the world over - and none more so than the groups at Imperial College and the Natural History Museum, who will work with NASA and ESA to select samples for return to Earth in 2031. But in fact, the UK's involvement in the mission begins long before then. Delayed due to technical issues, extended testing and the vagaries of COVID-19, ESA's ExoMars mission and the UK-built Rosalind Franklin rover scheduled to launch in 2020 will now lift off during the August-October 2022 launch window and land on Mars between April and July 2023. Built at Stevenage in the UK, the roving vehicle is about half as heavy again as NASA's Mars Exploration Rover twins Spirit and Opportunity but only one-third the mass of NASA's Curiosity, launched in 2011, and Perseverance, now on its way for a landing in Jezero crater on 18 February 2021.
